Inheritance Tax (IHT) nil rate band frozen for 5 years

The expected thaw in the IHT nil rate band has been put back on ice until at least 2018. By then it will have been frozen at £325,000 for 10 years.

In part, this boost to the Treasury coffers will pay for the additional costs associated with the capping of long term care costs, also announced. From an advice point of view, having a known cost can shape how you plan to transfer your wealth to your family.

Interest Rates Remain at 0.5% and no QE

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided at its monthly meeting not to introduce any new stimulus measures. It has kept interest rates at their record low of 0.5% and not to raise the amount of quantitative easing (QE) from the current level of £375bn.

The Bank of England’s monetary policy committee has decided to hold base rate at a record-low 0.5 per cent for the 39th consecutive month and to keep its programme of quantitative easing at £325bn.

Scottish Widows have completed a Pensions Report, showing the nation's retirement savings have hit an all-time low. The key findings from this year's report

Only 46% of people are saving enough for their retirement.
One in five (22%) are not saving anything for their retirement.
Despite retirement savings plummeting, pension income expectations have increased.
People expect twice as much as they are likely to receive with their current savings.

Annual Pension Contribution limits change - again!

The annual allowance has reduced from £255,000 to £50,000 and carry forward re-introduced..... 2006 saw the advent of pension simplification, but the wording now seems to be a little misleading. Severe tax charges apply for unauthorised payments to pensions, so check with your adviser before making any large pension contributions
